Let's Declutter

I haven't posted in over a week! I was drawing a blank as to what to post about. Mostly due to my lack of direction. So, please bear with me until I figure this out. The thing that most attracts me to blogging is the sense of community that one can attract by being interesting and engaging. I just haven't quite figured out how to be either yet. And while I tend to sometimes want to talk about things that make me feel productive, I don't want to presume that my ideas are great. And so I go round and round. To post or not to post? Such drivel! Let's just get on with it!

My latest endeavor shall be to declutter and simplify. I don't like having lots of STUFF. About once a year, I go through our stuff and throw away or, more commonly, donate to Goodwill. This time I was inspired when I happened upon Simple Mom's site when she was having a giveaway for Soule Mama's new book, The Creative Family. (the giveaway is over) If you're interested, check out Simple Mom's post for today about having too much stuff. It's pretty great and totally relevant. They both got me thinking about how Caleb has way too many toys, most of which he doesn't even play with. So, I gathered this bag full of toys that weren't even worthy of donation.

I put the babyish toys in a bag for drop-off at our storage unit and put some others in large tupperwares, for later exchange when he tires of the toys that are presently out. Although his room looks much better now, there is still room for more "cleansing". He plays with these toys so much more.

Please appreciate the embarrassment I am enduring by showing you my extremely distressed entryway. Despite me purchasing an expensive organization box (it's the black thing if you can spot it), this is the spot in our apartment most likely to be cluttered. Two purses, our library backpack, two bags of recycling, a box that Shane insists keeping around until he cleans the truck's air filter and lots and lots of shoes.

So, I've decided to go through my apartment, one area at a time, and get rid of stuff I don't need and trying to organize things in such a way as to prevent future outbreaks of clutter. Want to join me? I hope you do! Post on your blog about an area in your house desperately in need of decluttering and organizing and link in a comment to this post. Happy decluttering!

Ohhhhh! Good one Marie. I thoroughly enjoy decluttering. Unfortunately the rest of the fam gets scared and runs around rescuing things from me. If stuff turns up missing the blame me for throwing it away. And then they feel dumb when they find it later and I didn't really throw it away but then they say, "But Mom, you're always throwing stuff away."

It's because we have SO MUCH CRAP!!!

Shane does the same thing to me. If he can't find it, he assumes I threw it away. But he's getting better of keeping his stuff in HIS area, where I don't clean. (i just nag his to clean it :)

Looks like you did a GREAT job! Calebs room look so much more organized. I think everyone has too much stuff, it's just some people are better at cleaning it up then others. I have a spare bedroom that has become ye royal dumping grounds especially after our trip. I will take some pictures later and maybe show you all a before and after, you've truly inspired me Marie. Great idea!!!

FIVE train sets, no mommy he can never have too many trains!!!! Next time you can take a before and after! Maybe I should take a before and after of all the trash that is overflowing at work that was left for me....just kidding, I'm a little bitter about that. ANYWAYS......Derrek also says the same thing when I clean up cause I put his stuff away and he can never find it...Well, I didn't think he needed 20 magazines in the bathroom to read!!! Sounds like a man thing....Happy cleaning to you!

I would have to take pictures of the whole house....

It is just the stages of life and trying to be frugal.... but I have decided if you buy it garage sale, then to garage sale it back out you lose no money and can possible make money.... like the double stroller.

i'm with your meagan about having to take pictures of the whole house. i think i'm going to concentrate on small areas. like next i think i will declutter and organize our one double bookcase.

buying stuff at garage sales is such a good idea. especially for kids because i can't tell you how many things we bought for caleb that he just never liked and played with. what a waste of money.
