Even though I recently mentioned that I'm amazed that I finally figured out how to get Caleb to sit down and do school with me (happily), he continues to surprise me. Right now we're going through all the letters again. We did this already, but this time we're concentrating on lowercase, writing the letters and the sounds the letters make. Every few letters, we try to read very small words, just to introduce the idea. The first thing we do is review the letters we've already done. I write down the capital letters (cause he already knows the capital letters very well), then he writes down the lowercase and we go over the sounds.
Well, the other day, I was trying to get the big boy backpack done and Caleb was anxious to start school. He finally got tired of waiting and decided to start by himself! He missed the letter C and got E and D mixed up, but still! The fact that he started this on his own! I can hardly believe how things have changed. This totally made my day!
P.S. I tried to start him on Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, but the poem totally messed him up. We'd go over a letter that he already knew the sound for, and then at the end of the verse he'd be so confused that he would forget the sound it made. So, that is why I'm doing my own thing right now and then we'll start back with the book once he's got all the letter sounds down really well.
