The Good Earth

I read this book the summer before 7th grade. I had been placed in the Advanced English class, which I was promply kicked out of a semester later when I received a C. I was such a slacker. The sad thing is that that is the only class I have any memory of from Jr. High. I really did enjoy it. Anyway, we had to read The Good Earth, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Hound of the Baskervilles for our summer reading. I don't remember any of them and so I decided to read them all over again.

I borrowed The Good Earth from the library and read two-thirds of it in a few days. But, I got so emotional and upset at what was going on, I returned it to the library. But, I couldn't stop thinking about it and wondered how Olan was doing. So, I bought a copy at a used book store.

I just finished it and it was SO good. I can understand how it didn't leave much of an impression on me at 12 years old. It's a story about life's triumphs and tragedys. It brought me to tears, it made me laugh, and I found myself caring so much for Wang Lung and Olan.

So, next I'm going to work on The Count of Monte Cristo. But, it'll be the abridged version. Did you know that the unabridged version is about 1300 pages?!!! Shane bought me the abridged, which is a more reasonable 500 pages. haha, 1300 pages! me? that would take about 3 years!

I think I read The Good Earth as a teen. I may have read a different Pearl S. Buck book....hmmm... Idk but they were special to us, because Pearl Buck was from WV :)

But I dont remember ANY of it, if I did. I don't remember a lot of the books I read as a teen, honestly!!
