Fresh Squeezed Quilt

First off, I'm doing better now. Thanks for the caring and I'm sorry if I worried any of you with the last post. I just wanted to post about it because it's what's going on with me and I want the baby to know what I was like when I was pregnant. The good, the bad and the ugly. That was kinda ugly. The funny thing is that I talked to my dad about it and he made me feel better. Mostly because he apologized and said I could blame my episode on him because he's pretty sure that I got my attitude from him :) He's so funny. Then he told me about the bad day he had a few days ago and my day paled in comparison. It helps to have someone who really understands put things into perspective.

Anyway, on to fun things!

The first time I learned about charm packs was when my mom and I went on a quilt shop hop in West Virginia. That was tons of fun! We drove for about 14 hours and visited 4 (or was it 5?) quilt shops in one day! We're a couple of crazy fabric nuts, huh? I bought one Moda "Fresh Squeezed" charm pack, but couldn't figure out what to do with it, so I bought another pack on eBay. I've had them for months now and finally figured out a pattern that I thought would be great. I really didn't want to just sew the plain squares together but I didn't find a lot of charm pack patterns online. In my search, I did find a great site though! If you like charm packs, jelly rolls or layer cakes, you have to check out the Moda Bake Shop. Oh yeah, also, about two weeks ago, I ran into one of the fabrics in the Fresh Squeezed line on sale and bought two yards for the backing. I think this really motivated me to to something.

I made the pattern up, it's super simplistic though. But, that's what I wanted. Something simple (because I'm not that skilled of a quilter), but interesting (because what's the point of making something if it looks like you could have bought it at Walmart?) So, I cut each piece in half, but off center, and then put it all together. I did have a bit of a problem using my new 1/4" quilting foot (not sure what the real name is). I had the needle set in a different place for half of the squares. So, half the squares were 4.5" wide and the other half were 1/8" narrower. So, I had to trim all the squares so they were 4.25" squares. I have to make sure that when I'm using that quilting foot, I don't do any other projects and move the needle around. SO, what else was I working on? You'll have to wait.... :)

Ok, back to the quilt top. I have to order more fabric to make a border and then I can start sewing them together. For the first time ever, I'm actually going to quilt a quilt. Not sure how I will do this with out anyone to show me, but I'm trying not to think about that too much. I haven't ordered the fabric yet, but I think I will do a really thin blue border and then a thicker multi-colored striped border.

I LOVE the colors in your quilt Marie! Gosh, now you make me want to quilt again, but it has been so long I am not sure if I even remember how to! Are you going to use it for your new baby girl? It is so bright and cheery I love it! Can't wait to see what it looks like when it is done.

Okay, first, I love your last story. My bottom lip was out the whole time. But I was also laughing and thinking how this is a fabulous story for the baby book! Anyway, I'm glad it's over. Hopefully spring will show up soon.

Fantastic job on the quilt top. It's just gorgeous! I can't wait to see the finished product. You have a natural talent for sewing, I think. I don't think anything I made when I first started quilting looked that good. It almost looks like a disappearing nine patch quilt. That's cool that you just made it up.

Wow, the Moda Bake Shop is cool! Lots of great ideas. I liked the Sugar Cookies table runner, but I'd probably make a quilt. Good grief though, I don't have the time for that lately. They have lots of simple projects though. Thanks for linking to the site!
